November 2013 saw the opening of a new showroom concept in New York: based on the idea that intelligent design should be lived and used rather than just admired in an atelier, Design-Apart gives visitors in New York the experience of being welcomed in an Italian designed and fitted apartment.

Design-Apart is a 2700 square-foot loft in Chelsea where artists, chefs, architects and clients can interact and collaborate in a new living creative platform:  fully customised with over 20 of the finest Italian artisans and manufacturing companies, the initiative was born from the necessity to bring custom Italian design into the homes as well as to revitalise and internationalise small and medium-sized enterprises.

“Design-Apart pushes back against the perception that bespoke design is difficult to produce and hard for consumers to access,” says Diego Paccagnella, founder of Design-Apart.

“Advances in technology and methods of production allow us to offer even the most specialized craftwork at competitive prices. Bespoke, for us, goes beyond handmade and custom. It’s a dynamic product of relationships between people, materials and ideas in space.”

Visitors can immerse themselves into an Italian lifestyle, attend culinary and cultural events surrounded by handcrafted products, learn about the people and companies who created them and buy them through a unique process of customization. Just to name a few, you can find works by Ermes Ponti, who designed the interior complete of fitted wooden libraries and wardrobes, Tm Italia, manufacturer of bespoke kitchens, Berto , sofa and home furnishings manufacturer, Exnovo, creator of 3D professional printing products that range from lighting to design products, Technogel, specialised in the application of gel material to mattresses and furniture, Milldue, a leader in bespoke bathroom fittings and other italian excellence like Zucchetti. Kos, Bosa, Am Ricami and Renata Bonfanti.

Design-Apart is located on 110 West 25th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, and is open to visitors on appointment only from 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
